Fortunately for us, there were plenty of precedents in this part of town, which is gradually densifying. Wanting to maintain the cohesion of the streetscape in this particular part of Upton Park, the best option to maximise the space available to the apartment was to create an L-shaped dormer on top of the existing rear extension that matched the neighbour’s.
This option would increase the floor area of the existing two-bedroom flat by 32 sqm - an almost 60% increase! Then, upstairs, we were able to create an ample bedroom with plenty of storage with its own bathroom and accompanying study.
