How to Renovate Your Home with Single Storey Infill Rear Extension

In this property located between Deptford and Lewisham, the two related owners decided to extend and renovate their respective properties to accommodate their growing families.

This handsome building had previously been a single large family dwelling, but had been divided into two apartments, with one for each sibling.

Our brief, on this occasion, was to rationalise the layout of the downstairs area - which was previously inconvenient - and create more living space on the ground floor with single storey infill rear extension. Upstairs, the client was happy with most of the living arrangements, but desperately needed more utility and bathroom space for their family.


On the ground floor we used the ample back yard space to built a single storey infill rear extension that allowed us to do several things to improve the living accommodation. We combined the existing dining room and kitchen into an open plan kitchen diner with bi-fold doors to access the sizeable garden. The bathroom - previously next to the kitchen - was moved to a much more convenient location in the centre of the house, leaving ample space for the living quarters.

In terms of sleeping arrangements, the previous living room was converted into an ample second bedroom, and the space afforded by the extension and rationalisation of the layout allowed for the existing bedroom to gain a full en-suite bathroom!

Upstairs, a modest first-floor extension provided for a new bathroom and laundry room, which was the catalyst for a renovation throughout the rest of the property. In addition, a new window was built to give the upper flat a more spacious, lighter feeling.

WIth their rationalised layouts, both apartments now cover nearly 100sqm each, giving the families the space they need. On this occasion, we think the owners of the properties made a very wise decision to team up, invest and improve their homes - and so can you!
