Challenge
Our clients wanted to modernise their beautiful Victorian house for 21st-century living, improving space usage and light while adhering to conservation area constraints. The lower ground floor was particularly dark and uninviting, with a poorly integrated conservatory further exacerbating the issue.
Approach
Our first step was conducting a feasibility study to identify potential improvements that didn't require a large ground floor extension. From there, our design focused on enhancing livability and sustainability, featuring a rear extension and larger lightwell for the lower ground floor, and replacing the conservatory with an open, glass-walled extension.
Solution
The rear extension and lightwell transformed the lower ground floor into a bright, inviting space, with a new glass-walled bedroom and a larger bathroom. The ground floor became a spacious, light-filled area by fully integrating the new extension. Sustainability was also enhanced with photovoltaic panels, a ground-source heat pump, upgraded loft insulation, and improved bicycle storage. Ultimately, the council approved this respectful yet bold reimagining of a traditional house, blending modern living with conservation requirements.
