Challenge
Our clients wanted to convert a large garage in the Green Belt into residential housing, ideally replacing it with new houses. The challenge was to convince the council that a replacement building was an appropriate development without significantly affecting the area's openness.
Approach
We designed a pair of three-bedroom houses that reflected local traditions while incorporating contemporary elements. Despite their identical exteriors, we adapted the interiors to the site constraints, creating a large basement for one house to maximise space and functionality.
Solution
We successfully obtained planning permission for the two houses, which are only slightly larger than the original garage but contribute significantly more to the area. This project demonstrates how thoughtful design and strategic planning can achieve development goals even in protected Green Belt areas.
