Challenge

Transforming an outdated bungalow on a narrow plot in a regenerated estate to make better use of the space.

Approach

The conventional approach to this challenge would be to design two traditional semi-detached houses with mirrored layouts. However, by exploring alternative possibilities, we realised that taking a different path could lead to better results. Rather than producing two cramped and identical houses, wouldn’t it be smarter to create one full-sized, four-bedroom, family home and then a smaller, two-bedroom neighbouring property? The homes would be semi-detached and share the same design style, but be asymmetrical.

Solution

Our innovative design resulted in planning permission approval, providing both a family house and a smaller home, enhancing the site's use and contributing to London's housing stock without mimicking traditional Victorian proportions.

After

RIBA Chartered Architect's proposed floor plan layout including a kitchen with windows facing out to the front of the property whilst the dining and living space gives out directly to the back garden with large bifold windows.
